Terms of service

These terms are the agreement between you and Ungray when you use the website, the app and the API. We've tried to keep them short and readable.

The service

Ungray colorizes, recolors and upscales photos and colorizes videos. Some features are free with limits (for example, a number of watermarked previews a day); full-resolution downloads and full-length videos use credits or a paid plan. We may change, add or remove features, and we'll tell you in advance before removing something you've paid for.

Your account

You need an account for full-resolution downloads and purchases. You must be at least 13 years old (16 in the EU) and give an email address you control. You're responsible for activity on your account; tell us right away if you think someone else is using it. One free allowance per person: please don't create multiple accounts to collect free downloads or invite bonuses.

Your content

You keep all rights to the photos and videos you upload and to the results. You give us a limited permission to store, process and display your files only as needed to provide the service to you: to create your results, to show you previews, and to publish a share link if you create one. That permission ends when your files are deleted (see the privacy policy for retention). We don't use your files to train our models.

You confirm that you have the right to upload the files, for example because you took them, own the prints, or have the permission of the rights holder, and that doing so doesn't break anyone's rights or the law.

Acceptable use

Don't upload, create or share:

  • sexual content involving minors (we report it to the authorities), or sexual content of anyone without their consent;
  • content that harasses, threatens or defames a person, or that is meant to deceive people into believing an event happened that didn't;
  • content you don't have the right to use.

Don't interfere with the service: no automated scraping, overloading, bypassing limits or watermarks, reverse engineering of our models, or reselling access, except through the API under its terms. We may suspend accounts that break these rules, and remove content that does.

About AI results

Colors are an estimate. A black-and-white photo doesn't record color, so Ungray predicts plausible colors from what it learned. Skies, skin and vegetation are usually right; clothing, cars and painted objects may not match what they really were. Ungray never changes the light and shadow of your photo, but the colors are an interpretation, not a historical record. If you publish colorized images where accuracy matters (books, documentaries, archives), please label them as AI-colorized.

  • Photo packs are a one-time purchase of credits. One credit is one full-resolution photo download: colorized, upscaled, or both. Credits never expire and re-downloading the same result is free.
  • Pro and Studio are subscriptions billed monthly or yearly until you cancel. You can cancel at any time in your account; you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for, and we never renew silently: we email you before each yearly renewal.
  • Video is priced per second of footage at the rate shown before you pay, with a $1 minimum, or uses the minutes included in your plan.
  • Prices are in US dollars. Our payment provider acts as the merchant of record: it processes the payment, issues the invoice and adds any sales tax or VAT that applies where you live.

Refunds

  • Not happy with a result? Use "Get the credit back" on that photo, and the credit returns to your account. It's limited to keep it fair, but we'll always look at a bad result if you write to us.
  • Unused packs can be refunded within 14 days of purchase if you haven't used any credits from them.
  • Subscriptions: if you forgot to cancel a renewal and haven't used the plan since, write to us within 14 days and we'll refund it.
  • Video: if a video fails to process or the result is clearly broken, we redo it or refund it.

This doesn't limit any rights you have under consumer law where you live.

Using your results

Results from the free tier and photo packs are for personal use, such as family albums, gifts and social media. Results downloaded on Pro or Studio may also be used commercially (for example in YouTube videos, books, client work or products). Whatever your plan, rights in the underlying original photo stay with whoever holds them.

Warranty and liability

We work hard to keep Ungray available and to produce good results, but the service is provided "as is", without warranties that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or that results will meet a particular standard. Always keep your own copies of your originals: we delete uploads automatically.

To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim (or $50 if that's more). Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law.

Ending the agreement

You can stop using Ungray and close your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms; if we close it without your fault, we refund unused credits and the unused part of a subscription.

Changes and contact

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and tell account holders by email at least 14 days before the change takes effect. Questions: use our contact page.
